In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, without initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Strains and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Key events leading up to this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
